In this collection, Carver shows modern life as a series of hardships whereby ordinary people, who have the odds stacked against them, must battle for survival. He explores this idea in many of his stories, using themes such as a consistent pattern to which he creates his males characters, the effects of worldly events that are not explicitly named nor even mentioned, and the failure of the American Dream. Carver consistently creates male characters from the same basis of personality. Each of his characters are dissatisfies with their existences, and many of his characters feel isolated and alone. This feeling of failure and helplessness closely resembles Carver’s own self-professed feelings during his first marriage after the first ten happy, ‘idealistic’ years. Carver creates characters that reflect himself, hence why characters such as the presumed ‘Mr Slater’ in ‘Collectors’ is dealing with what seems to be the aftermath of a devastating divorce. Carver writes ‘Mr Slater’ as lost, alone and without purpose, shown by his constant twice of looking ‘through the curtain for the mailman. ’ This shows that the passage of time for this man is marked by nothing other than the comings and goings of the mailman. Further showing this sense of helplessness that proves Carver’s idea that ordinary people must struggle for survival, is the underlying message of the story ‘Collectors’, which refers to the loss of personal identity. Imagery such as the vacuum cleaner sucking up the ‘little bits of ourselves’ that are left each night on a mattress, shows the character Aubrey Bell slowly taking away what is left of ‘Mr Slater’s identity. ‘Mr Slater’ is struggling to stay afloat after his divorce, but the odds are stacked against him, as Aubrey Bell later takes a letter for a ‘mr slater’ and says that he’ll ‘see to it. ’ The presumed ‘Mr Slater’ of this story has lost his battle of survival against the odds stacked against him, as Carver presumably believed he had after his divorce with his first wife. In the short story collection, ‘Will You Please be Quiet, Please? ’ Carver portrays modern life as a series of hardships whereby ordinary people, who have the odds stacked against them, must battle for survival. As Carver heavily based his work upon experiences of his own life, it can be assumed that the ‘odds stacked against them’ refers to elements outside of the characters control, such as the economic situation of America in the 1960’s. The poorly state of the American economy was a direct result of the Cold War, which occurred during the 1960’s. The Cold War was a stalemate between Russia and America, with each country aiming nuclear weapons at the other, yet neither firing. As each country had to majorly increase production of these nuclear weapons, a huge chunk of the country’s budget was spent on this cause, leaving less money for America’s other needs. The state of the economy, although not explicitly mentioned, is apparent especially in the story, ‘Jerry and Molly and Sam’ in which the company Al is employed by is ‘cutting back. ’ According to Al, ‘no one is safe’ from these cut backs due to the company attempting to reduce costs. As is apparent in Jerry and Molly and Sam, the impending loss of a job can result in many problems, most of which replicate problems faced throughout Carver’s own life. A theme consistently broached by Carver, is the theme of the Failure of the American Dream. The American dream, an ideology brought on by the economic boom after world war two in America, was a standard to which all working class families strived to live up to. The American Dream conveyed the idea that anyone can have this level of happiness, provided they work for it, and each fit into their socially accepted roles. Despite the choices that each mother makes, in the end the reader senses the unconditional love that each have toward their daughter. Emily’s mother described Emily as a beautiful baby. She commented that â€Å"she was a miracle to me† (Charters 671). Although her mother regretted leaving Emily with others while she worked, she had no choice. By working, unconditional love was shown because she worked to provide for Emily, no matter what it cost her. In addition, she gave up her nights of sleep in order to work during the night so that she could spend the days with Emily. Emily’s mother was extremely guilty that she sent Emily to the convalescent home. Although this was not what she wanted for her daughter, a local clinic convinced her that the home will provide her with the â€Å"kind of food and care [Emily’s mother couldn’t] manage for her† (Charter 673). In hopes that they were being truthful, Emily’s mother sent her away – hoping that she would have a better life, despite the pain it would cause her mother. Although in the end, the reader realizes that the clinic that suggested the home were wrong, Emily’s mother did not feel confident enough about her own instinct to challenge their suggestion. Although Emily’s mother was not sure how to nurture and care for Emily after she returned home from the convalescent home, she remembers encouraging Emily to use her developed talent for comedic acting at school. One morning after being encouraged by her mother, Emily took her mother’s advice and entered into a amateur show, to Emily’s surprise, she earned first place. She called to tell her that â€Å"I did it. I won, I won; they gave her first prize† (Charter 675). This is a prime example of unconditional love, even though her mother was lost in what to do for Emily; she still encouraged her to make something of herself. In the moment that she won first place, Emily’s mother stated that â€Å"suddenly she was Somebody† (Charter 675). In the end, Emily’s mother decides to â€Å"let her be† and again shows her unconditional love as she hopes that Emily will come to know â€Å"that she is more than this dress on the ironing board, helpless before the iron† (Charters 676). She hoped that Emily would realize that she is more than her childhood. Although Dee turned out to be the more successful daughter, Mrs. Johnson shows Maggie’s hidden worth and makes it known to Dee when she returns home with her boyfriend. In doing so, Mrs. Johnson stood up for what was right, not in her benefit, but to benefit Maggie. Although Dee wanted the quilts that their mother was saving as a wedding gift for Maggie, Mrs. Johnson refuses to give in. In this moment, for the first time, she hugs Maggie and takes the quilt from Dee’s hand and gives them to Maggie. For once, both daughters sense the unconditional love (which has not been evident) that Mrs. Johnson has toward Maggie. Despite the hardships that each mother faced, each story ended with a glimmer of hope and the realization that unconditional love can move mountains in ones life. These crops called for large scale operations and cheap labor. Wage laborers were not available and it was necessary to resort to some type of compulsion to secure workers. The Indian appeared to be the obvious answer, utilized the institutions of tributary labor and repartimiento, the granting of land along with the Indians living on it. The Indians proved unsuitable for forced labor. They died off rapidly under oppression and even resorted to mass suicide and infanticide. Their number declined to the point of extinction. The Europeans turned to the African as a solution to their labor problems. The African was not unknown to Europeans prior to the 15th century, but there were very few Africans in Europe. The Portuguese exploring the Atlantic coast of Africa brought back two African slaves and subsequent expeditions resulted in the purchase or capture of other slaves. At this time Portugal faced a manpower shortage and African slaves proved to be the solution to its problems. By 1460, 700 to 800 were being imported annually. Spain soon followed the example of Portugal and adopted the importation of African slaves.
